This recording came about when several things happened during the year leading up to it:

1. I have been singing a tribute to the Alberta Hunter version of this song in my concerts, not just with The Organ Grinders but also with AppenDixie (the happiest bunch of dix in Prague!).

2. Almost every time I'm at a swing dance event and the Alberta Hunter version is being DJ'd, several dancers would rush up to me and ask me "IS THIS YOU SINGING?!"

3. We had a convergence between the two bands at the Prague Spring Swing Festival (PSSF) 2017, where we performed that song together on the same stage, and it was EPIC.

So naturally, I had to include it in the album and invite the crazy AppenDixie horns to participate. Now there won't be any confusion whose version is being DJ'd ;)

IMPORTANT: I’d like to mention in this context that the song was written and first recorded in 1917, and was a reflection of that period in history. The term “Darktown” referred to segregated African-American communities, and the interpretation of the lyrics was meant to show that no matter the trouble, one can still go out and celebrate dance and music.

If anyone wants to read about the song’s history and the terminology, check out these Wikipedia articles:

I'll be down to get you in a taxi, honey
Be ready about half past eight
Come on babe, don't be late
I wanna be there when the band starts playing

Remember when we get there, honey
Two-steps I'm goin' to have 'em all
Gonna dance out of both my shoes
When they play that Jelly Roll Blues

Oh tomorrow night
At the Darktown Strutter's Ball
